ABs Absolute Barbecues, one of the most popular restaurants in Hyderabad, organizes periodic food promotions from time to time to provide a refreshing change of taste to their loyal customers. The latest in this list is "Absolute Marine", a seafood festival, which is on till 7th February. The festival has a wide variety of seafood items in their table grills, wish grill as well as the main menu.
A special initiative for this festival is setting up of the Tempura station, a live counter. Here prawns, anchovies, squids as well as some more varieties of fish are coated in a batter and fried as per your choice. We tried out the Prawn Tempura served with fried red chillies, as well as some squid preparation and both turned out to be good.
The Wish Grill has been refurbished again with a range of seafood items taking the centre stage. The quails and rabbits on the wish grill have taken a backseat and they have been replaced in the front row by squid, octopus, shark meat and red snapper among a huge range of other marine produce. A wish grill preparation of squids with the Bengali mango mustard sauce tasted simply delicious, whereas the red snappers pieces prepared in the oriental Hoisin Sauce was a little too sweet for my palate.
A special mention has to be made of the Seafood Special Consommé, a light but flavourful soup with prawn pieces in it.
The pick of the regular barbecues for me was the Tandoori Crab. They were looking fabulous as they were being ferried around on large metal skewers. The taste was brilliant, the tandoori masala was just the right quantity and meat inside had almost melted inside the shell. The huge sized Barbecue Fish was a feast for the eyes.
There was another Chinese preparation of boneless tuna fish which was being served from a mobile cart. A Konkani sweet water fish preparation Grilled Tilapia had the right amount of spices. The Seafood Cake consisting of assorted marine meat would appeal to the hardcore fishaholics.
The usual starters were also present in the festival – for people who do not crave seafood to that extent. One which I liked was called African Lioness, a beetroot steak reminiscent of the veg chops from Bengal. The name apparently has been given from the fact that lions feast of beetroots when they are pregnant. The Jamaican lollypop was another interesting starters with spicy veg mince. I like the Chicken Drumsticks at ABs and today it was good too.
The main courses have also been augmented with seafood dishes. Fish Cold Cuts have been introduced in the main buffet. Another highlight is the Prawn Cocktail which were presented nicely in porcelain cups. Among the gravy items, I liked the Goan Fish Curry with a little bit of steamed rice. I missed my favourite Srilankan Crab Curry but do concede that it is not possible to serve it everytime I visit.
The dessert counter was decent as usual. The special for the day was Apple Halwa, which was delicate and not very sweet. Normally, apple is not used for the preparation of halwa, so it was a nice variation. Crepe Suzette with Orange and Caramel Sauce was the other star. Then there was the usual Chamchams, phirnis, Tiramisu bites and of course, five variants in the stone ice creams.
Seafood aficionados will enjoy this special promotion.
