Oh Bean Der, a new all-day dining restaurant has started operations in Jubilee Hills. The outlet has taken the place of “Leaf” restaurant on the ground floor of Amogh Boutique Hotel, under the management of the Butta Hospitality group. Nicely redesigned into a bright café look, the place serves global cuisine in both a-la-carte and buffet mode.
The restaurant promoted as a global café starts working from 7 in the morning, with a special menu for breakfast including waffles, eggs, sausages and frittatas. My first reaction was that along with the a-la-carte offerings they should start offering breakfast platters like the standard English breakfast which I feel will become popular very quickly.
At a review session, I tried out their well-prepared Spanish Omelette replete with vegetables and cheese, and served with toast and veggies. Another interesting dish was their Cup Scramble where scrambled eggs are served in a cup. Both the breakfast items were fresh and well prepared and I enjoyed them with their KitKat Shake, a thick milkshake topped with a Kitkat chocolate.

The menu also has some interesting starters which are available all day through a Café Menu. I tried a Mushroom Cappuccino Soup which was served with some garlic bread. The thick and creamy puree type soup were quite to my liking. From the salad section, Watermelon and Feta Salad was served in a nice plating.

The short eats also have some enticing dishes. Orange & BBQ glaze Chicken Wings were one of them. The chicken starter prepared in a thick BBQ sauce tasted good in isolation but did not have much of orange flavour.

The starter which I absolutely loved was Fish O Fish, fillets of marinated fish crumb fried and served on a bed of harissa mayo. The fish fillet was juicy and it had taken in the marinade well, and in spite of Basa not being my favourite, I loved the combo with the mayo.

The restaurant has a section called Fusion Barbeque in their menu. Vegetable Stick Kababs from this had mixed vegetables cooked on skewers and served on sticks, with a very interesting tomato and mint based layered dip in shot glasses. The presentation of the dishes at Oh Bean Der is nice, some effort has definitely gone into styling the food. Potato Salsa Shotzz had small sized potato balls in a cilantro flavoured salsa dip.

The menu has its share of some Italian cuisine too, in terms of pasta, pizzas and risottos. We opted for the thin crust Cajun Chicken Pizza and some Penne in Pesto Sauce. Both the dishes were adequate though not spectacular. A mocktail version of Appletini was good to go with these.

I was impressed by the House Chicken Burger. The patty was large and juicy and was served with a lot of cheese and veggies.

After all these appetizers I had very little space to try out the mains. I went for two combos. First was the Thai Prawn Green Curry with steamed rice and kimchi. The curry was a tad too dilute and could not transmit the Thai flavours to my taste buds. In the Lacchedar Butter Chicken, the boneless chicken was spicier than usual, I would not call it authentic (rather it was more of Hyderabadi Punjabi food) but the taste was quite nice with the soft naans served.

Finally the dessert platter. The choices here are Chocolate Truffle pastry, Red Velvet Cake, Chocolate Brownies and Lava Cake. I only had a spoonful of each, they seemed par for the course.

The décor of the restaurant is open and more like a café. Seating is comfortable. They also have a lunch buffet for a quick meal in the afternoon, priced very attractively at Rs 399 (plus taxes). The menu is quite varied, has something for every palate, and the chef team seems to be working hard to correct any teething issues. Try out the place when you visit Jubilee Hills next.
