The New and Improved Ohri’s Eatmor at Banjara Hills

Ohri’s is one of the oldest and most popular hotel and restaurant chains in Hyderabad. The group has been a pioneer in a lot of areas in the Hyderabad food and beverages scene – be it the ice cream parlour Eatmor or the themed restaurant Silver Metro. They now have a chain of more than twenty restaurants, each presenting a different genre of Indian as well as International cuisines, ranging from sizzlers or Pan-Asian to kababs or exclusively vegetarian outlets.

Among these restaurants, Eatmor stands out as a coffee shop in Banjara Hills. Popular for its signature ice creams, the place is also known for their signature dishes like Chole Bhature.  After a major revamp done recently, the restaurant is now offering a range of buffets throughout the day – a breakfast buffet, lunch buffet, dinner buffet as well as a midnight buffet. A small menu of a-la-carte dishes is also there for people who may be interested in specific dishes.

Ohris Eatmore

Invited to sample the lunch buffet and new a-la-carte offerings, we noticed that the entire interiors have been redone with a very open look. Seating has been made extremely comfortable, and the buffet counters have been placed one side of the restaurant, along with an elaborate salad bar and dessert counter.

Tonda Machine
Tonda Machine

My attention was first drawn to the Tonda ice cream and gelato machine which has been newly installed. This machine is unique and can house twelve desserts at a time at a temperature up to -30 degrees. The cold desserts are housed in compartments and they slowly rotate around. Once someone lifts the lid the machine stops facilitating pick up of your favourite dessert. As soon the lid is secured it starts rotating again. This really helps the buffet customer including children in viewing the whole range of desserts at a single point, and self-serving whatever they like.

One of the salient aspects of the buffet is the unlimited Shakes and Juices in it. The milk shakes with different flavours like strawberry and chocolate scored well with the diners. There are two live stations, one each for non-veg and veg. It is good that these have been separated – I have seen a few buffets in Hyderabad doing veg and non-veg dosas on the same griddle much to the discomfiture of vegetarian customers. I tried a crisp Masala Dosa from the vegetarian counter, and the spicy Chicken Satay was my pick from the non-vegetarian griddle. The taste of the dosa was augmented by some delicious chutneys.

The buffet had quite a few starters. BBQ Chicken Wings was what I liked the most, while Cilantro Crumb Fried Fish went with the tartar sauce served with it. Murgh Haryali Kabab and Corn Chilli Cheese Croquet were the other two starters of note.

A novel drink Eatmor has introduced is the Pink Cheese Cake Lemonade, a lemonade with a perceptible flavour of Swiss cheese. This is indeed an exceptional drink, and a must-try for anyone visiting the restaurant.

Among the a-la-carte menu, we were served the famous Chole Bhature of Ohri’s – this is one of the best places in town for this and Ohri’s have been serving this for a few decades now. The bhatura is one of the largest you have ever seen and the chole tastes extremely authentic.

Desi Stroganoff is another dish which is prepared well here - creamy butter paneer served with Jeera Rice.

Tandoori Seekh Roll has two versions, the vegetarian version has vegetable and corn whereas the non-vegetarian one has mutton seekh kabab. Both are served with French fries, salads and mint chutney.

Among the desserts, Rose Rasmalai and Gajar Ke Halwa were the picks, Blueberry Cheesecake and Banoffee Tarts were also served.

Titanic

We ended the session with a few ice creams. The Titanic has a towering presence with a tower of ice cream flavours served over dry ice. Awful Awful has a combo of chocolate fudge and vanilla, it is so heavy that it is almost a meal by itself.

Eatmor is one of the popular places for Midnight Buffet (Rs 699 All Inclusive). The midnight buffet menu has been enhanced with mandi, kabsa, and other Lebanese delicacies, apart from the usual Hyderabadi and continental food. The Breakfast Buffet (Rs 225 All Inclusive) has been launched with a very attractive price too. So, now you can visit this place anytime in the day, for their anytime buffet spreads as well as signature a-la-carte dishes. The lunch and dinner buffet price ranges from Rs 600-650 depending in weekday/weekend. The buffet menu changes every day and the items mentioned here may not be available on a particular day.
